Flying Pursuit and Staxton delivered the perfect Saturday with 2 winners from 2 runners in the Yellow & White silks. Both had been running well lately without having their preferred underfoot conditions. The rain arrived just in time for both horses.
First up was Flying Pursuit who was ridden by Nathan Evans. He was looking to land the Skybet Dash Handicap at York for the second year running. Drawn in stall 6, he was up with the pace in the early stages of the race. Just after the 3 pole, Nathan moved Flying into a share of the lead. Nathan asked him for maximum effort a furlong out. Inside the final furlong, Flying showed a tremendous attitude and held off his stable mate to record back to back victories in this race, the 1st 2 pulled over three lengths clear of the third placed horse. When he gets his ground, he is a very good, game horse.
Next Up was Staxton who was running at Newmarket under PJ McDonald. He too, had been crying out for some rain and it duly arrived come race day, resulting in a reduced field of 4 runners. From the off, PJ sat Staxton just behind the early leader. At the 2 furlong pole, he went into a share of the lead and battled gamely to hold off a late challenge to score by a neck. A thoroughly deserved win for a horse that relishes some cut in the ground.
A superb Saturday all round with both horses landing valuable handicaps for their owners bringing back great memories of a similar feat achieved by Fast Shot and Yourartisonfire in 2014.
Both horses have plenty of good options ahead for the remainder of the season and owners have plenty to look forward to.
