Piceno ran at Wolverhampton on Friday in the 7 furlong handicap and Ian Mongan rode. The horse had been given a decent rest after his last race and went into the race in good form. Although he is slightly better suited to Southwell with that course being flooded Piceno will have to ply his trade at the other all weather courses for awhile. Drawn is stall 7 the plan was to try and get a handy position and do his best. Piceno managed to jump well from the stalls and tracked the early leader. Nearing the second last bend Ian moved Piceno forward and turning into the home straight he was in front. Off the home bend it turned into a dash for the line and several horses began to challenge. Piceno kept on and as usual with a good each way bet he finished 4th! He was beaten by a well handicapped winner but showed enough to suggest he will be competitive during the winter on this surface.
Mitchell’s Way ran at Newcastle on Saturday in the 2 mile 6 furlong novice hurdle. Although only up against 3 other rivals it was always going to be tough race with all his rivals having a high handicap rating. The ground was very taxing and Fearghal jumped Mitchells out in front at a sensible pace. The order and the pace of the race did not change until around ¾ mile from home when Fearghal quickened and soon had one of his rivals in trouble. Up the home straight Mitchells Way who again had jumped superbly began to ask some questions of his rivals and it was not until approaching the final flight that two of his rivals began to get on top and move ahead. Fearghal allowed Mitchells Way to come home in 3rd place in his own time. Unsaddling Fearghal stated he could have finished a lot closer to the 1st & 2nd but looked after the horse on the sticky ground. Hopefully he won’t be raised in the handicap for that performance. He picked up over £1300 for 3rd, so it wasn’t a bad day out.
