Ailsa Craig At Catterick

The team from Ontoawinner were joined at Catterick Races by Derek & Paul Wilson who were the lucky winners of the Twitter Competition. Ailsa Craig looked fantastic in the parade ring and quite rightly won best turned out – congratulations to Louise and Gemma.

Patrick Donaghy was booked to ride and was instructed to try and get across from his wide draw and sit around 4/5th place and sit handy just off the pace then turning for home try to kick on and ride her as if she would get the trip.

Unfortunately the best laid plans never came off. Patrick tried to get Ailsa across but several other jockeys had the same idea and turning out of the home straight first time Ailsa was stuck on the outside of the field and then was bumped and lost position dropping back through the field.

Ailsa turned to make some ground down the back straight but was kept out wide and so turning for home the leader Ultimate had a large lead. Ailsa set off in pursuit out wide and was making steady progress and entering the final furlong she looked like she was going to get third only for another horse finishing on her outside snatching that position in the shadows of the post.

Ailsa returned back fine and Patrick reported there was no problem with the distance and the draw had scuppered any plans as he was forced to travel wide throughout. Overall a solid run from this like able mare who tried her best and there will be other days for her in the future.
