Flat Season Preview Part 1
The flat season is fast approaching and over the coming weeks, we will be blogging previews of the flat season for each of our trainers. We will give you updates on all of our horses, we will let you know how they have wintered, our trainers thoughts and hopefully point you in the direction of a winner or two. This is always an exciting time to be involved in horse racing, the anticipation of untried 2 year olds, improving handicappers and the thoughts of winners ahead. OnToAWinner head into the season with a vastly improved string, we are looking forward to improving on our tally from last season and hope you join us for the ride. Part 1 of our preview focuses on Karl Burke.
Karl is married to Elaine Jarvis, daughter of trainer Alan. In his early years Karl rode as an apprentice for Alan but always likely to be too heavy for the Flat he switched codes to jump racing, and went on to gain 50 winners from 750 rides. Turning his interest to training, Karl and Elaine set up a livery and pre-training yard in Newark where they broke young stock in. It was here they started training a small string of both flat and jump horses. With horses such as Philistar and Daring Destiny winner of the Ayr Gold Cup, a Group 2 in Germany and a Group 3 in Ireland. Karl has been training at Spigot Lodge in idyllic North Yorkshire for the past 8 years, he had his best season ever when Lord Shanakill won the Group 2 Mill Reef stakes at Newbury(G2) before being beaten by only a short head in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.
Horses trained by the Burkes are:
Angels Calling: She is a lovely 3 year old bay filly, who ran 5 times as a 2 year old. She won a nursery in nice style at Ffos Las and placed on 2 other occasions. Some of her runs came on bad ground and we always felt that she will be a better horse on a decent surface. She has grown and filled out over the winter – the reports coming back from Karl would indicate that she will be a better horse this year. She was ready earlier than expected so we decided to give her a spin around Lingfield on Friday, she traveled well for the majority of the race and faded a little in the home straight, finishing fourth, a nice start to the season. She will be running in the 1st couple of weeks of the season. We are confident that she has developed and improved enough to win races this season. She will be campaigned in handicaps over 7 furlongs and a mile. We only have 5% left in this filly – one £600 upfront payment and training fees of £120 monthly.
Frontline Phantom: He is a 6 year old bay gelding who has won 5 times and placed on two occasions. He missed last season due to an injured tendon. He started back in full training in January and has not shown any ill affects of the injury. He will be ready to run towards the end of April and will be campaigned over mile and a mile and a quarter. He is now back down to his last winning mark and could prove to be a very well handicapped horse. He’s a very genuine horse and is sure to give his owners a lot of good days out. Frontline Phantom is available for lease, this means that there is no upfront purchase, you simply pay monthly fees of £79 per 5% share and just £49 per 2.5% share.
Miami Gator: He is a 6 year old Chestnut gelding who has won ten times and been placed 14 times. He is ultra consistent and has been in great form in the past couple of months on the all weather. We are really looking forward to getting his lad back on the turf. He is fit and ready to go ahead of the flat season. As with Frontline Phantom, Miami Gator is available for lease, this means there is no purchase fees, you simply pay monthly fees of £79 per 5% share and just £49 per 2.5% share. If you have ever considered dipping your toe into racehorse ownership, Miami Gator may be the ideal horse to get started with, he will be running in some good handicaps and will be winning races this season.
Ticking Katie: This is a beautiful 2 year old bay filly by Baltic King. She is a lovely big filly, built for speed. Karl recommended Yourartisonfire to us last season so when he did the same with this filly, we didn’t hesitate in snapping her up. Reports on her progress at Spigot Lodge are very good and all being well , she will make her racecourse debut in April over 5 furlongs. Due to her professional attitude and build, we are confident that she will be winning this season. Karl has already put her through the stalls, all that is missing right now is a bit of spring sunshine to help her lose her winter coat which will put her absolutely spot on. Exciting times ahead
Yourartisonfire: He had a tremendous 2 year old campaign running 5 times and finishing in the money in every race. He won his maiden in good style at Haydock. OnToAWinner co-won Youartisonfire with Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney and his former team mate , John O Shea. Yourartisonfire provided Wayne with his first winner as a racehorse owner. He finished up last season with a rating of 80 and had matured nicely over the winter. He will be running in a lot of good races in the coming months and we are excited to see what the season holds for this fella. Karl and Shaun have told us to expect a bigger and better horse this season, good news indeed!
Stay tuned for Part 2 of our flat season preview.
