Flat Season Preview Part 3

Over the past few weeks, we have been bringing you previews of the season ahead for our string and giving you updates on how they have wintered and what we can expect from them in the season ahead.

If you missed part 1 or 2 of the season previews, they can be found here:

In part 3, we take a look at Tim Easterby, Edwin Tuer and Alan Swinbank

Tim Easterby is a classic winning trainer and son of the great Peter Easterby. The family are racing blue bloods. Tim grew up watching his father train champions such as Sea Pigeon and Night Nurse. Not only has he saddled a Classic winner in Bollin Eric, memorably triumphant in the 2002 St Leger at Doncaster, he has also scored in Group 1 races with Pipalong, Fayr Jag and Somnus, who was crowned Europe’s champion sprinter in 2004. Tim has also had winners over the jumps at the Cheltenham festival. He’s a gentleman to speak to and always makes us feel welcome at the yard and at the races.

Fast Shot: Fast Shot joined the OnToAWinner ranks in June 2011, bought on the recommendation on Tim Easterby. Niall has known Tim for many years and they have a very good working relationship, Tim said Fast Shot would be an improver as a 3 year old and he was proved right.

When we purchased Fast Shot, he was rated 62. Fast Shot was a model of consistency in 2011, winning 3 times and placed 6 times from 11 runs. With form of 3-1-3-3-1-1-2-2-4-3, it is no surprise that he has shot up to an official rating of 82, winning twice in that time for OnToAWinner.

Fast Shot won another 2 races in 2012 including a valuable sprint handicap at Newcastle on heavy ground, taking his career earnings to 33k. At the end of the campaign, he ran in the Ayr Silver Cup, finishing in mid division. He probably needed the break at that point in the season, but to start out with a horse rated 62 and contest in the Ayr Silver Cup is a huge success story for OnToAWinner.

For those of you who follow Fast Shot, you will know that he can go on any ground but relishes heavy going. He always travels very strongly in his races and Tim says he is in great form ahead of the new season. We are looking forward to a great 2013 with this fella, he will be running in valuable handicaps at all the top tracks. We believe that he can contest one of the big sprint handicaps at Ayr to finish the year.

Edwin Tuer trains his small string from his farm near Great Smeaton, North Yorkshire. He is from a farming background but has successfully bought and sold horses for many years. He has the time to give individual attention to horses and loves buying one to figure it out and improve. He’s shown his ability to do so having improved Easy Terms to win the Cumberland Plate, and Fazza to rack up three wins in 2011. Edwin likes to sell on once a horse has been improved, and that logic also suits OnToAWinner at times.

Horses trained by Edwin are:

Gold Show: She is a 4 year old mare by Derby winner Sir Percy. She has had thirteen runs, winning once and was placed on 7 further occasions. As the form figures suggest, she is a very tough, genuine filly. She can run in fillies only handicaps which is a bonus with a horse of her profile. In her short career, she has already won £11,500. She was trained by Mick Channon last year and was picked up at the sales by Edwin Tuer. She is currently rated 68 but once had a rating of 86 having finished fourth in a listed race on her second start (Sweetenham listed fillies stakes). She acts on all types of going and has been working well at home.

She is new to OnToAWinner and will debut in the Yellow & White at Pontefract on the 9th April and is a certain winner this season.

We offer lease shares in Gold Show, this means that there is no upfront purchase, you simply pay monthly fees of £110 per 5% share and just £60 per 2.5% share.

Ailsa Craig: Ailsa Craig is a 7-y-0 mare by Chevalier out of a Petardia mare. She is genuine and tough. She is now rated 57 but has had a rating as high at 78. We feel that she has dropped to a winnable mark. She didn’t perform as expected in 2012 but we expect more from her this year given her current rating.

She is the winner of 5 races so has confirmed her status as tough enough and good enough to go to the paddocks when Edwin calls time on her racing days.

Ailsa also has her own account on twitter (@tweetstershorse) , she gives regular updates on her busy life in general, she also gives away free badges when she runs!!

Alan Swinbank has been involved in racing for many, many years. He is one of the finest judges of a horse you could ever be involved with. He is legendary for his ability to ready a winner, and ensure the bookmakers pay for the preparation! His handling of Collier Hill to win the Irish St.Leger, Hong Kong Vase and The Canadian International at Woodbine was an extraordinary achievement, amassing over £2m in prizemoney. Alan’s facilities at his Richmond base are superb and horses and owners are very well looked after.

Horses trained by Alan are:

Eutropius : This 4 year old is by the sire Ad Valorem. Ad Valorem was a top class 2 year old who was unbeaten in that age group. He then progressed to be a top class 3/4 year old wining the Group 1 Queen Ann Stakes at Royal Ascot and tackling some top class Group 1 races across the world. In total he won £444,464 before going to stud.

Eutropius has had his fair share of injuries and has only run once in the Yellow & White. He is free of injuries now and has his 1st entry of the season at Musselburgh on Monday. He will improve with experience and we are looking forward to seeing what the season holds for him

Mitchells Way: Although we are previewing the flat season, a quick update on Mitchells Way. He won his penultimate race and finished an unlucky 2nd last day out. He started off 2013 with a rating of 111 and has already gone up to 123.

He has really improved and impressed us this year. He will eventually go over fences where we believe he will excel!
