Mitchell's Way @ Catterick

Mitchell’s Way took up his engagement at Catterick yesterday as expected. He took everything in his stride in the parade ring and looked well. Alan instructed Fearghal to sit in just behind the leaders and kick for home on the final bend. Mitchell’s Way travelled well just behind Plus Jamais for a good mile and a quarter and as instructed attempted to take it up just before the home turn. At the same time the first 3 in the race also kicked for home. Our fella didn’t have the same turn of foot to stay with them and Feargahl gave him a couple of encouraging slaps. Mitchell’s Way stayed on at the same pace for the remainder off the race to come in 7th. He wasn’t knocked about too much as his jockey looked after him once beaten.

On his return Feargahl said that during the race he had travelled really well but did not have the same finishing kick as the first 3. He felt that we needed to go Hurdling and step him up to a minimum 2 miles 5 furlongs. He also said that he thought he was a nice horse who would be ok once we sent him over timber. He was very complementary about him and felt he would win races. Alan was in agreement with him and felt on reflection he should have gone straight Hurdling after Haydock as Dougie Costello had said the same about that run.

Alan and his jockey’s Jerry, Dougie and Feargahl have all said he would come into his own once we put a Hurdle in front of him and also stepped him up in trip to at least 2 miles 5 furlongs. I’m very hopeful that this will be the case having watched back all his runs.  Providing Mitchell’s Way has come out of today ok Alan is going to look for a Novice Hurdle in about 3 weeks.
