Piceno 2nd at Southwell
Piceno lined up in the Class 4 handicap over 7 furlongs yesterday at Southwell. Matthew Hopkins who claims 7 lb was aboard the Scott Dixon trained 5 year old.
Piceno was drawn in stall 8 and bounced out of the gates into a share of the lead in the early stages.
Heading into the bend, Pi was 3 off the rail, travelling nicely and heading into the straight he kicked for home.
The front 2 quickly went 2 to 3 lengths clear of the rest and it was a case of catch me if you can. The 9/2 shot Two No Bids was making eye catching progress on the outside of the field. It quickly became a battle between Pi and Two No Bids with the latter getting the better of it close home going on to score by a length with Piceno finishing a further 1 & ½ lengths ahead of third. This was an excellent performance from all involved.
To say we are delighted with Piceno this year would be an understatement, he won 2 good races this year at Chester & Newmarket. He has also been runner up on 4 separate occasions. He is very popular at Scotts yard and it’s not difficult to see why. A big well done to Scott for keeping him competitive for the year.
Matthew is a young jockey with a bright future. He recently finished runner up on Burnhope when he ran at Kempton and can boast 2 winners and 4 places from his last 12 mounts; Impressive. A winner in the Yellow & White silks is not too far away.
Piceno will now have a well deserved break, hes earned it.
