Fast Shot ran an absolute cracker to finish 3rd in the sprint handicap today at York’s Dante meeting.

David Allan took the ride aboard the Tim Easterby trained 4 y/o. The ground was drying all the time it was described by the jockeys in the 1st race as being on the sticky side of good.
Fast Shot was drawn on the near side (stall 18 of 20), David took his time getting him down to the start and Fast Shot was one of the last horses to load.

As the race got under way, the field made its way to the middle of the course and Fast Shot was travelling in mid division. 3f from home, David started nudging away and Fast Shot responded as he always does to move past his rivals. David began to get serious with our lad and with 1 and a half furlongs to go, Fast Shot was in a share of the lead.

In the closing stages , he was passed by the fast finishing Secret Witness and Baby Strange , eventually finishing 3rd , 2 lengths behind the winner.

Considering the step up in class and the fact that he excels in soft ground, this was a huge run from Fast Shot. When we got involved with him, he was rated 57 and prior to today’s race, he was rated 87 and still improving.

He will be running in some very competitive sprints this year and hopefully will run in one of the top sprints at Ayr later on in the year.

Big thanks to Tim and David who certainly know how to get a tune out of this horse, and a big well done to all of his owners on a great day. He is a real star of a horse to be involved with.

If you want to get involved : check out his profile here : http://www.ontoawinner.net/flathorse/fast-shot

Mon Duchess finished 4th on her 1st appearance at Redcar today over 6 furlongs. Duran Fentiman took the ride aboard the Lawrence Mullaney trained 4 year old.

Mon Duchess bounced out of the stalls to take up a share of the lead and travelled well for the best part of the race. Entering the last furlong, she began to tire and finished 1 and a half lengths behind the hot favourite, a very respectable 4th on her racecourse debut.

This was always going to be a learning curve for her and here at ontoawinner towers, we were delighted with what she showed today.

If there are any prospective owners interesting in getting involved in a horse at a very reasonable cost with no upfront purchase, she could be the filly for you. Check out her full profile here

Fazza didn’t bounce out of the stalls and Shane opted to hold Fazza up in the early stages of the race.

From the 4f mark, Fazza was travelling well under a confident ride from Shane and began making steady progress on the rail. Shane began to get serious and switched off the rail, Fazza quickened nicely to challenge the leader and go on to score for a couple of lengths.

This was an impressive performance from both horse and jockey and credit must go to Edwin who regularly gets our owners in the winners enclosure. A great evening was had by all

Fazza ran in the 1 mile class 5 handicap today at Pontefract. Shane Kelly took the ride aboard the Edwin Tuer trained 5 year old.

The ground was heavy and this was less than ideal for Fazza. Drawn in stall 2, Shane bounced out of the gate well and took up a handy position in second place.

At the 3f mark, Shane began to niggle away and fast shot showed his usual gameness and responded. The winner: Wisemans Diamond led from pillar to post and won well, Fazza was mugged on the line for 2nd and finished 3rd in a good race.

Fazza always gives a good account of himself and Edwin had a great training performance in the next race when Easy Terms won at a price of 16/1. Congratulations to all the staff at Edwins for a job well done.

This imposing Colt is bred to be a real 2 year old and has a full sister that won at 2 last year (Almond Branches) and a half brother who won 3 races (Fibs and Flannel). He is by the stallion Dutch Art who had a fantastic start to his stallion career last year producing top class 2 year olds Caspar Netscher, Miss Work of Art, Robert le Diable and many more winners. We believe we are very fortunate to have purchased this fantastic looking Colt who did a lovely breeze at the recent Doncaster Breeze up Sale. We couldn’t resist buying him and we are delighted he will be trained by Karl & Elaine Burke. Karl is as happy as we are with him and believes the early signs are extremely good. He is a magnificent looking horse who could be top class and we are confident he will win as a 2 year old. He will be ready to run in the next 2/3 weeks and is eligible for the £10,000 Racing Post Bonus. We recommend this horse very highly.

Mitchell’s Way, by Needwood Blade out of Ghana, is a bit of a racing enigma. Like many good horses, his breeding doesn’t jump out at you that there is an out and out stayer or even a NH horse on the page. When Alan sent over the horse’s breeding, suggesting we come to see him, the sales page was left in the ‘in tray’ for a few days, it just wasn’t that exciting.

However when we went to see him, a different story emerged. We saw a horse that would do well to win a bumper, and would improve with time. Physically imposing, strikingly attractive, easy going, everything you want in a chaser.

He wasn’t ever going to be a smash and grab horse, like Fast Shot. Instant reward wasn’t on the page. He’ll take a bit of time, but make no mistake, this is a racehorse. Whatever he does in his first season, he needs to enjoy doing it. He’s one for the long road, novice chasing, handicap chasing, a NH saturday horse. Make no mistake, this fellow will be alright. He won’t we quick enough to beat quick nippy hurdlers and there’s little point in running him on the flat, but if jumping is your game, take a pull, settle in and give this horse a bit of time, and one day you’ll hopefully be rewarded.

In the words of that famous footballing legend “it’s a funny ol game”,

We arrived at a rainy Wolverhampton on the back of our first winner of 2012 (well done Fast Shot and his owners), with all the expectations of a really bold show from “Archie” and if lady luck was really smiling on us maybe a double on the day.

Sadly our “Archie” hadn’t read the script, he thought today was a play day and not a race day, he looked really well in the parade ring, but didn’t transfer that on to the track and sadly finished down the field, Luke (Morris) reported that he “spat his dummy out” after he took a slight bump on the bend and basically downed tools.

We know he is better than this, and maybe just needed a run after such a long layoff. However Archie’s owners Gavin, Dawn and Mike (Middleham stables open day comp winners) certainly enjoyed themselves on their first visit to a racecourse as owners.

Big thanks to all at John Weymes for having him looking so well.

Fast Shot ran in the 6f class 4 handicap today at Ripon. David Allan took the ride aboard the Tim Easterby trained 4 year old.

Fast Shot was drawn in stall 3 and David elected to go to the far side along with 3 other jocks, this proved to be the correct decision. Bekermet lead them along the far side with Fast Shot settling on the rail, travelling comfortably in behind.

At the half way mark Fast Shot looked to be travelling best of all on the far side. 2 furlongs from home, David pressed GO and Fast Shot responded in great style to lead the far side. At this stage they looked about level with the near side rail. Fast Shot stayed best of all and went on to win by a couple of lengths.

This was a well-deserved victory for our lad. He proved he can win on all types of ground and he will be able to run over 6 of 7f in future.

You can watch the full race here :

Review from Chris @ Newcastle

Ailsa, as always was well turned out and won best turned out again, this is the second time in a row Ailsa has won best turned out. All credit goes to Gemma who does a magnificant job in preparing the string, she really did look a picture.

In the parade ring, Edwin spoke with todays jock : James Sullivan ; there was a concern that with all the rain that the track was sticky and that Ailsa might struggle in the conditions, boy were we proved wrong.

James was told to get in position, keep Ailsa handy and do his best depending how she acted on the ground. During the race, Ailsa settled in midfield but appeared to lose her position entering the home straight. When asked a few questions, she picked up and started to slice her way through the field.

Entering the final furlong there was only one horse in front and try as hard as she could, Ailsa finished 2nd, beaten only a length.

This was a great run from the gal, when done and dusted, Ailsa returned to the enclosure and got a well-earned drink and pat from her supporters.

Edwin was over the moon with the run, as where her connections. There is lots to look forward to with this filly.
