John started out hunting at a young age from his grandfather’s farm in Ireland, he joined Edward O’Grady’s yard as soon as he finished school and became a conditional jockey and enjoyed several years there before heading across the water in search of further opportunities. John joined Jimmy Fitzgerald’s thriving Malton operation in the 80’s before branching out on his own to ride as a freelance jockey. After riding the best part of 200 winners, he called it a day in 1990 and ran a livery yard from his base in Settringto and training soon followed. He now has 65 horses split between his Bellwood Cottage and Highfield Yard’s. Over the last decade, he has had any number of winners under both codes bolstered by the likes of Blythe Knight, Character Building, New Planet and Countrywide Flame which have well and truly put him on the map.
