Ivan Furtado grew up on his family ranch in Brazil near the Argentinean border and began riding at the age of four. Though he never planned to become a jockey, he was always drawn to training, helping his grandfather care for quarter horses and developing a strong passion for the craft. After university, he moved to the UK to improve his English and landed a role with top National Hunt trainer Jim Old, where he spent five formative years learning the ropes. He then worked as assistant trainer to Roger Charlton, riding Group 1 winner Al Kazeem and caring for stars like Cityscape and Time Test, before a further stint with Alan McCabe. These experiences with a range of training regimes and horse types helped shape his own approach. Ivan took out his own licence in 2015 and quickly found success at Wiseton, near Doncaster, before moving to Averham Park Stables in 2018. He now has taken the reins at the world-class Eboracum Racing Stables where the exceptional quality of the facilities provide a world-class environment for both horses and staff.
